Фрирайд или внетрассовое катание — это катание на горных лыжах или сноуборде за границами (или вдали от) горнолыжных курортов.
Более 50 лет назад горнолыжники (тогда бордеров еще не было) начали осознанно съезжать с трасс и пробовать ухватить состояние полета и парения в глубоком снегу.
Специальных (широких) горных лыж тогда не было, поэтому катались на обычных, очень узких лыжах для трасс. Поэтому состояние легкого полета достигалась с большим трудом — для этого нужна была приличная скорость и отличная техника.
